It's hard to provide a complete list of every reason someone might seek counselling. What I have tried to do is list the main reasons that people seek support. However, it impossible to cover everything and if the issue you want to discuss is not listed, it's likely that I can still help. The issues people face can feel complex and overwhelming, and often do not fit neatly into a box!
The important thing is feeling safe to share in a confidential space, and to build a trusting relationship. You will be heard but not judged. If I feel you would benefit from more specialist help, I will do my best to provide you with relevant information on alternative support.
For those interested in my modality, my approach is humanistic integrative including Person Centred, Transaction Analysis, Psychodynamic and Gestalt. The emphasis in my approach is always on building a trusting and an equal therapeutic relationship.
The frequency of counseling sessions with The Velvet Couch will depend on your individual needs and goals. Most clients may benefit from weekly sessions, while others may attend bi-weekly. Sometimes when life gets busy or we feel overwhelmed, it's tempting to cancel a session, but I have found this is often the most productive time to talk and make space for yourself.
Most clients find it useful to have their appointment on the same time/day each week which not only keeps that session available for you, but also helps you build space into your schedule. We will review things together regularly and make sure we are doing the best for you. If I do not have availability on you preferred days I hold a waiting list for clients and can notify you when a session becomes available.
It's important to find what works for you and we can have a flexible approach together. Some clients prefer a slightly longer session or an extra session, both of these can be discussed together and arranged accordingly.
Please give at least 24 hours’ notice when cancelling a prearranged session, otherwise I will need you to pay for the session. This in part is to promote attendance and commitment to the process. It has been my experience that breakthroughs occur at the times when clients find it the most challenging to attend.
